Rose Hip

The ovoid fruits of the rosebush (Rosa species) are known as Rosehips (Rosehip, Rose Hip, Rose Hips) or sometimes Hipberries. Turning red in the fall, after the petals have released, they can contain up to 1.25% vitamin C. Other constituents include carotenoids, flavonoids, polyphenols, sugars and plant acids (citric and malic). The use of rosehips has primarily been for its vitamin C content, either in supplements (capsules, tablets) or teas. The amount of vitamin C in rosehips is not enough to act a supplement, and ascorbic acid is often added to increase vitamin C content in rosehips containing supplements. Freshly ground, dried rosehips are still a pleasant addition to any herbal tea.
